Art in Silkeborg

There is no doubt that art has a strong position in Silkeborg. In the town, there is a long tradition of promoting art at all levels – whether it is at an amateur level or at a top professional level.

The artist, Asger Jorn, who was a co-founder of the Cobra Art Group, Cobra, stands out like a lighthouse in the world of art internationally as well as in Silkeborg. He lived for several years in the town, to which he later donated a large part of his art production. Today, this is exhibited at Silkeborg Museum of Art, which is situated beautifully by the Gudenå river.

At the lake Ørnsø, another beautiful place of art is located. The former large spa facility appears as an attractive Art Centre named Art Centre Silkeborg Bad. The Art Centre has changing exhibitions. 

Even the smaller places are visible in the townscape. Every year nearly 100 artists open their doors at the event of Open Studio Doors, where they welcome people to take a look inside their studios to make their art more familiar. Many local artists create a life for themselves with art production, which is inspired by the beautiful natural surroundings of Silkeborg.

The schools in town encourage children’s creative skills. For example, the Adult School Lysbro, which is a special school for physically and mentally disabled, has proud traditions of pictorial art. One of the heights was when 4 of the paintings were designated for an exhibition at the Art Museum Louvre in Paris.

In Silkeborg it is also possible to buy art. The oldest gallery of modern art, Galleri Moderne, situated in the heart of the town, houses one of the largest gallery exhibitions in Scandinavia. In particular, it has been a tradition to exhibit the well-known Cobra artists.
