Silkeborg is a unique commercial town. The town was not granted market town status until 1900, but things have gone from strength to strength since then. Today, the town is known as a charming market town with a myriad of wonderful specialist shops, cosy cafés and restaurants, all assembled in a network of pleasant pedestrian streets. Within walking distance of the town centre, you have the beautiful scenery, the River Gudenå, the harbour area and the Papirfabrikken (the paper factory) district.
Smaller towns such as Kjellerup also have a lovely, vibrant commercial environment with small specialist shops.
