Knap's Private Residence
Silkeborg Tourist Office is idyllically located in a spacious villa dating from 1921 that fronts onto Silkeborg Harbour. The building was erected at the behest of Bank Manager Arnold Knap and was designed by local architect Anton Rosen.
The family residence featured large rooms furnished with quality period furniture and also featured two servant's rooms. Down through the years the house has seen many a large cigar smoked in the course of a serious conversation.

Birthing Clinic with Wailing Children In 1956 the house went through a sudden change of status – from private residence to birthing clinic. Miss V. Rasmussen bought the villa and established Midtjysk Fødeklinik (Mid-Jutland Birthing Clinic) which helped to bring a number of Silkeborg residents into the world in the years from 1956 to 1979. The once so prestigious rooms echoed to the sound of babies' screams and mothers' chat and to top it all off a glass panel in the door was fitted with an engraved stork.
Rock and Roll Collective
In 1979 the clinic closed and the house went through a few uncertain years before its fate was determined. Miss Rassmussen's heirs had difficulty selling the property, perhaps because it was considered to large to be used as a home, however, in 1982 six people bought the property and turned it into a collective.
And so it stayed until 1994, and, according to one resident, the house witnessed many a wild evening with parties till the early hours in it's spacious suites. Wailing children had given way to rock music.
Tourist Office
After the local authority bought the house in 1994 the property was refurbished, and on the 10th of May 1996, the town's new tourist office opened for the first time. The tourist office provides a number of services to Silkeborg residents and visitors to the region on a daily basis. Within the tourist office's yellow walls you'll find all the information you need to help you during your stay as including a wide variety of local brochures. The Bank Manager's living room is now the tourist bureau's front office.
When Anton Rosen designed the building in 1921 he had no idea of what it would end up being used for. Nevertheless, the bank manager's residence makes and an excellent tourist office without any substantial alterations having proved necessary.
Anton Rosen's ArchitectureAnton Rosen is also the architect behind a number of the other of the town's buildings such as Th. Langs School and Ørneapoteket. Anton Rosen's style is easy to recognise and was unique in Denmark at the time. He was inspired by a number of different artistic movements including turn of the century Art Nouveau. Many of Anton Rosen's buildings are constructed in a highly detailed and elaborate style, though the tourist office is more simple.
