In the 19th Century the barges sailed up and down the Gudenåen from one town to the other with merchandise of different kind. Being a barger man was hard work and the hunger was satisfied at the inns along the river, where a large pot with solid food was simmering on the stove all day long - ready to feed the people from the barges. The dish was called Barger Man Stew and consists of large pieces of pork and beef, roughly sliced vegetables and smoked bacon. At Svostrup Kro, which is situated a stone's throw from Gudenåen, you will still find Barger Man Stew on the menu – though a little more modern with pieces of tenderloin, fried popatos and crispy bacon.
