Museums

There is much more to the Silkeborg area than just outstanding countryside and outdoor activities. The area is also home to a wide variety of museums. Here we have a short description of the museums to inspire you.  

Silkeborg Museum

The 2,400 year old remains of Tollund Man are famous all around the world. His body, perfectly preserved by a peat bog west of Silkeborg, now lies peacefully in Silkeborg Museum.

Silkeborg Museum is housed in the town's oldest building, a small manor house dating from 1767.
The museum has an excellent collection of iron age artefacts.

Papirmuseet Bikuben

Silkeborg paper factory was crucial to the town's growth. Today, a visit to Papirmuseet Bikuben (The Bikuben Paper Museum) can provide you with an interesting insight into how paper used to be manufactured.

Museum Jorn

Museum Jorn was designed by architect Niels F. Truelsen. It nestles in an area of parkland on the banks of the  Gudenå River. The museum houses a number of works by Danish artist Asger Jorn as well as his private collection of Cobra movement artworks and modern European art.

Art Centre Silkeborg Bad

 

Art Centre Silkeborg Bad is located in the former spa complex in the woods around Ørnsø Lake. The attractive location, historic old buildings, and the artworks themselves combine to provide the visitor with a unique experience.

Art Centre Silkeborg Bad shows a number of changing exhibitions throughout the year by Danish and Foreign artists with special focus on contemporary art.

Silkeborg Bunker Museum

The parkland surrounding Silkeborg Bad is also host to Silkeborg Bunker Museum. The museum tells the story of the German military headquarters in Denmark during the Second World War. The bunker also houses an exhibtion that tells the stories of German refugees who lived in the area after the end of the war.

Jysk Automobilmuseum

Jysk Automobilmuseum (Jutlands Automotive Museum) in Gjern houses a unique collection of motorcars and motorbikes. The collection spans the period from 1900 -1960 - a must for motor enthusiasts.

Blicheregnens Museum

Blicheregnens Museum (The Blicher Area's Museum) is located in fields backing onto Thorning Vicarage. The museum documents the life of Steen Steensen Blicher who was once vicar of the neighbouring church.

In the small town, Kjellerup, you can also see the stones of Steen Steensen Blicher, which are made by the monumental mason, Jens Erik Kjeldsen.

Energimuseet

Travel back through time on a high voltage ride for meddlers, nerds and the curious. Energimuseet (The Electricity Museum) is a cross between a museum and a science centre  just waiting to be explored - so why not take the family on a electrifying day out.
