The Silkeborg area is well known for its outstanding countryside, including the Gudenå River and Denmark's largest area of woodland. A perfect destination for ramblers.

The Towpath
The towpath has a story all of its own that stems from the days before the Silkeborg area was accorded preferential trading rights. Men used to pull the heavily-loaded barges down the Gudenå River .

Warning - On rainy days there may be a lot of mud on the Towpath.

Hærvejen
Hærvejen was once the main route for travellers passing up through Jutland, and today it takes in a number of historical attractions as well as outstanding countryside. You can treak along Hærvejen, or bits of it, at your own pace.

Pilgrims on Hærvejen
Back in the middle ages, Hærvejen was part of a pilgrim route taken by pilgrims travelling from the Scandinavian countries to the shrines of Southern Europe. Hence it's nickname: The Pilgrim Road.
